One of Malta’s largest and busiest towns, right in the middle of the island — close to the offices of Mrieħel, the University and the coast, with more space for your money than the harbour towns.
Birkirkara is a real working town rather than a postcard. Everything you need is within its own streets — supermarkets, schools, clinics, pharmacies, gyms, restaurants and a busy town centre — and it sits at the crossroads of the island’s main roads, so almost everywhere is a short drive away. Homes range from modern apartments and penthouses to maisonettes and traditional townhouses, and they are generally larger than similarly priced homes in Sliema or St Julian’s. The honest trade-off is traffic: the main roads get busy at peak times, so the street you choose matters.
Birkirkara’s centrepiece is the Basilica of St Helen, whose feast each August fills the town with band marches, fireworks and street decorations. The town also keeps Malta’s history in everyday view: the arches of the Wignacourt Aqueduct, built in the 17th century to carry water to Valletta, and the restored old railway station, now a public garden. It gives Birkirkara something newer suburbs lack — a strong community and a genuine sense of place.

Professionals working in Mrieħel, Msida or the central business areas, families who need space without a coastal price tag, and anyone who wants a practical, well-connected base with real Maltese town life around them. Birkirkara is where people move when they want the whole island within reach and their monthly rent under control.
Birkirkara gives you more space for the money than the harbour towns. Modern apartments and penthouses with terraces sit at the top of the range; older maisonettes and townhouses in the inner streets give the best value.

Yes — it’s one of the most practical family towns in Malta. Schools, clinics, parks and everyday shops are all local, and homes are generally larger for the money than on the coast.
Useful, but not essential. Birkirkara is one of the best-connected inland towns by bus, and many residents commute without a car. If you do drive, expect peak-hour traffic on the main roads.
Steadily. Birkirkara has more homes on the market than the smaller villages, but well-priced properties on good streets still go quickly — and many let before they’re widely advertised.
